How to Get a Tanker Endorsement: Requirements & Test Guide

The tanker endorsement is one of the easiest CDL endorsements to obtain. No TSA background check is needed — just pass a 20-question knowledge test at your state DMV. You can walk in, take the test, and have the N endorsement on your CDL the same day. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Prerequisites

The tanker endorsement has minimal requirements. For background on what the tanker endorsement is and who needs one, see our glossary page.

Valid CDL — Class A, B, or C. The tanker endorsement is an add-on, not standalone.

State DMV fee — $10-$50 depending on your state (covers the test and endorsement addition).

Study time — 2-5 days of focused study using your state's CDL manual.

No TSA Background Check Required

Unlike the hazmat endorsement, the tanker endorsement does not involve TSA at all. No background check, no fingerprinting, no weeks of waiting. This means you can go from deciding to get it to having it on your CDL in a single day if you study in advance.

Why No TSA Check Is Needed

The TSA Security Threat Assessment is required only for endorsements that grant access to materials that could be weaponized (hazardous materials) or secure facilities (port access via TWIC). Tank vehicles carry liquids that may or may not be hazardous. Many tanker loads — milk, water, juice, food-grade oils — pose no security threat. The tanker endorsement addresses driving skill (handling liquid surge, understanding vehicle dynamics), not security clearance. If your tanker load is also hazardous (fuel, chemicals), you need the H endorsement too (which does require TSA).

Knowledge Test Topics

The tanker test focuses on the unique challenges of operating tank vehicles. For a complete study guide, see our tanker CDL test prep guide.

Liquid Surge and Slosh

How liquid moves inside tanks during braking, acceleration, and turning. The forward surge effect during braking is the most tested concept. Partial loads create the worst surge conditions.

Center of Gravity

Tank vehicles have a higher center of gravity than standard trailers, increasing rollover risk. The center of gravity shifts as liquid sloshes, creating dynamic instability during turns and lane changes.

Baffled vs Smooth Bore Tanks

Baffles reduce front-to-back surge but not side-to-side slosh. Smooth bore tanks (used for food-grade products) have maximum surge. Drivers must adjust following distance and braking technique accordingly.

Tank Vehicle Inspections

Checking valves, manhole covers, piping connections, emergency vents, and structural integrity. Specific inspection points unique to tank vehicles that are not part of standard pre-trip inspections.

Loading and Unloading Procedures

Proper connections, grounding and bonding (for flammable liquids), monitoring during loading, and ensuring weight distribution. Overloading a tank can cause structural failure and rollover.

Emergency Procedures

Spill containment, emergency shutoff procedures, when to evacuate vs when to stay, and who to contact. Specific to liquid cargo emergencies including environmental contamination.

Study Resources

State CDL manual (tank vehicles section): Your primary source. Download free from your state DMV website. The tank vehicles chapter is typically 15-20 pages.

Online practice tests: CDL Test Prep, Cristcdl.com, and similar sites offer free tanker endorsement practice tests. Take them until you consistently score 90% or higher.

Study time needed: 2-5 days for most drivers. The tanker test is shorter and generally considered easier than the hazmat test. If you already understand basic vehicle dynamics, you may need even less time.

Scheduling the Test

Contact your state DMV to schedule a CDL endorsement test appointment. Some key points:

Most states require appointments for CDL testing; some offer walk-ins

Bring your current CDL, payment, and any state-specific required documents

The test is computer-based at most locations — 20 questions, no time limit

Results are immediate — you know if you passed before leaving the DMV

Pass/Fail & Retakes

You need 16 out of 20 correct answers (80%) to pass. If you fail, most states allow a retake after a short waiting period (1-7 days, varies by state). There may be an additional fee for each retake attempt ($5-$25 depending on state). Most drivers pass the tanker test on the first attempt with adequate preparation.

Combining with Hazmat for X Endorsement

If you also hold or are pursuing the hazmat endorsement, taking the tanker test gives you the X endorsement (H+N combined). This opens fuel hauling — one of the highest-paying sectors in trucking.

Get Both Endorsements in One DMV Visit

If your TSA background check for hazmat has already cleared, schedule both the hazmat and tanker tests at the same DMV appointment. You take two separate tests (30 questions for hazmat, 20 for tanker) and walk out with the X endorsement. Total DMV time: about 60-90 minutes for both tests.

Renewal Process

The tanker endorsement renews with your CDL (typically every 4-8 years depending on state). Renewal requirements vary — some states require you to retake the knowledge test; others automatically renew the endorsement with your CDL. No TSA involvement at renewal since there was no TSA check to begin with. Check your state DMV for specific renewal requirements and fees.

Complete Timeline

Days 1-3: Study the tank vehicles section of CDL manual

Focus on liquid surge, baffles vs smooth bore, partial loads, and inspections

Days 3-5: Take practice tests until scoring 90%+

Use free online resources to verify your readiness

Day 5-7: Take the test at DMV + endorsement on CDL

Same-day results and endorsement — start hauling tanker loads immediately

Fastest CDL Endorsement to Get

The tanker endorsement is the quickest CDL endorsement to obtain because there is no TSA waiting period. You can literally study over a weekend and have the endorsement by Monday. Compare that to the hazmat endorsement (4-8 weeks) or TWIC card (8-12 weeks).
