Tanker Trailer Weight & Dimensions

Every pound your tanker trailer weighs empty is a pound you cannot fill with cargo. Understanding tanker trailer weight by material (aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel), dimensional specifications, and how to calculate your actual payload within the 80,000-lb federal GVW limit is essential for maximizing revenue on every load.

Tanker Trailer Empty Weight by Material

The construction material is the primary determinant of empty weight. Lighter tankers carry more cargo within the 80,000-lb limit:

MaterialEmpty WeightPayload (80K GVW)*Primary Use
Aluminum8,500-9,000 lbs~53,000 lbsPetroleum, light chemicals, water
Carbon steel10,000-13,000 lbs~49,000 lbsGeneral chemicals, industrial liquids
Stainless steel (304)12,000-14,000 lbs~48,000 lbsFood-grade, corrosive chemicals
Stainless steel (316L)13,000-15,000 lbs~47,000 lbsHigh-corrosion chemicals (acids)
Lined carbon steel11,000-14,000 lbs~48,000 lbsSpecific chemicals (rubber/poly lined)

*Payload assumes 18,000-lb tractor. Actual payload = 80,000 - your tractor weight - empty trailer weight.

The weight difference between materials is significant. An aluminum petroleum tanker at 8,500 lbs empty has approximately 6,500 lbs more payload capacity than a 15,000-lb stainless steel chemical tanker — assuming the same tractor. That 6,500 lbs translates to roughly 1,065 more gallons of gasoline (at 6.1 lbs/gal) or 780 more gallons of diesel (at 8.34 lbs/gal) per load.

Lighter Tankers Earn More Per Load

If you are an owner-operator buying a tanker trailer, every pound of trailer weight costs you revenue on every load. Over 200+ loads per year, the revenue difference between an 8,500-lb aluminum tanker and a 13,000-lb steel tanker is substantial — potentially $10,000-$20,000+ per year in additional cargo capacity. This is why virtually all petroleum tankers are aluminum.

Dimensional Specifications

Tanker trailer dimensions vary by type, capacity, and number of axles:

DimensionTypical RangeNotes
Overall length40-55 feetPetroleum and chemical: 40-48 ft. Some pneumatic: up to 55 ft.
Tank diameter72-96 inchesLarger diameter = more volume but higher CG.
Overall height11.5-13.5 feetIncluding frame, tank, and top fittings. Max legal: 13'6".
Overall width96 inches (8 feet)Federal maximum width. Tankers typically use the full 8 ft.
Axle configuration2 or 3 axles3 axles (tridem) for heavier loads. 2 axles (tandem) for lighter loads.
King pin to rear axle35-43 feetCritical for bridge formula compliance. Varies by state.

Payload Calculation

Your actual payload capacity is determined by a simple formula:

Payload = 80,000 - Tractor Weight - Empty Trailer Weight

Light Setup

17,000 lb tractor + 8,500 lb aluminum tanker

= 54,500 lbs payload

Medium Setup

18,500 lb tractor + 12,000 lb SS tanker

= 49,500 lbs payload

Heavy Setup

19,500 lb tractor + 15,000 lb SS tanker

= 45,500 lbs payload

The 9,000-lb difference in payload between the lightest and heaviest configurations above translates to approximately 1,475 fewer gallons of gasoline per load or 1,080 fewer gallons of diesel. Over a full year of hauling, that is a significant revenue difference. For detailed capacity calculations by cargo type, see our tanker trailer capacity guide.

Axle Weight Distribution

It is not enough to be under 80,000 lbs total. You must also comply with federal axle weight limits and the bridge formula:

Axle GroupFederal MaximumWhat It Means
Single steer axle12,000 lbsFront axle of the tractor
Tandem drive axles34,000 lbsRear axles of the tractor (2 axles)
Tandem trailer axles34,000 lbsRear axles of the tanker trailer (2 axles)
Tridem trailer axles42,000 lbs*Three-axle trailer setup (*subject to bridge formula)

Tanker trailers with sliding tandem axles allow the driver to adjust weight distribution between the tractor drive axles and trailer axles. When the tanker is loaded heavy toward the front (common with multi-compartment petroleum tankers), sliding the tandems forward shifts weight to the trailer axles and off the drives.

Weigh Before Leaving the Loading Facility

Always cross a scale before departing the loading facility. If you are overweight on any axle group or total GVW, it is much easier to offload product at the facility than to deal with an overweight violation at a weigh station. Many shippers have on-site scales. If the shipper does not, find the nearest truck scale and weigh before hitting the road.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Tanker

If you are an owner-operator purchasing a tanker trailer, the material choice depends on your target cargo:

Aluminum — Best for petroleum and non-corrosive liquids. Lightest weight = maximum payload. Not suitable for corrosive chemicals. Lowest purchase price. Best resale value for petroleum tankers.

Stainless steel 304 — Standard for food-grade applications. Good corrosion resistance for most food products and mild chemicals. Required for FDA-compliant sanitary tankers. Mid-range cost.

Stainless steel 316L — Premium grade for highly corrosive chemicals (acids, caustics). Superior corrosion resistance but heaviest and most expensive. Required for certain chemical applications.

Lined carbon steel — Lower cost than stainless with chemical-specific interior linings (rubber, poly, epoxy). Good for dedicated product service. Lighter than stainless but heavier than aluminum.

Overweight Penalties

Exceeding the 80,000-lb GVW limit or any axle weight limit results in overweight penalties that vary by state but can be severe:

  • Fines ranging from $1,000 to $16,000+ depending on the state and amount overweight
  • Out-of-service orders requiring you to offload product before proceeding
  • Potential CSA score impact from weight violations
  • Carrier and shipper liability for damage to roads and bridges
  • Loss of shipper relationships — repeat violations get carriers blacklisted

Axle Weight Violations Are More Common Than GVW Violations

Many tanker drivers focus only on total GVW but forget about axle weight limits. You can be under 80,000 lbs total but over the 34,000-lb tandem axle limit if the load is poorly distributed. Liquid cargo in tanker trailers distributes differently than palletized freight — the load concentrates in the center and bottom of the tank. Always check both total and per-axle weights before departing.

How Our Team Ensures Weight Compliance

At O Trucking LLC, we factor weight compliance into every tanker load we dispatch:

Pre-load payload calculation

Before booking a tanker load, we calculate the maximum legal payload based on your specific tractor and trailer weights, the product density, and the route (accounting for state-specific weight limits). No surprises at the scale.

Multi-state weight compliance

Some states have stricter weight limits or different bridge formula applications than the federal standard. We verify that your loaded weight is legal in every state on your planned route to prevent costly overweight violations mid-trip.

Need Weight-Optimized Tanker Dispatch?

Our dispatchers calculate maximum legal payload for every tanker load based on your equipment specs and route. Maximize your hauling capacity without weight violations.
