Local Truck Driver Jobs — Home Every Night
Want to drive but also want dinner with your family? Local driving jobs keep you within 100-200 miles of home. Run drayage, LTL, and last-mile loads in your metro area — multiple stops per day means strong daily earnings without sleeping in a truck stop. CDL and non-CDL drivers welcome.

O TruckingWhat You'll Do
- Run 1-4 short-haul loads per day within 100-200 miles of home
- Deliver drayage, LTL, last-mile, and regional consolidation freight
- Drive a day cab, box truck, or whatever equipment fits your local routes
- Build familiarity with local shippers and warehouses for repeat freight
- Be home every night — no truck stops, no rest areas, your own bed
A Day in the Life
Alarm goes off at 5 AM. You're at the yard or your first pickup by 6:30. Today you've got 3 loads: a morning drayage run from the port (45 minutes each way plus dock time), a mid-day LTL delivery to an industrial park, and an afternoon run hauling furniture to a retail store. Each load is under 100 miles — you know the routes, you know the dock workers by name, and you know which receivers have the fastest check-in. By 3 PM, you're heading home. Traffic is your biggest enemy, not hours-of-service clocks. You grab your kids from school, eat dinner with your family, and do it again tomorrow. The pay per mile is lower than OTR, but your expenses are almost nothing — no truck stops, no hotels, no eating out. When you add it all up, local drivers often take home the same net pay as OTR drivers.
Requirements

- Truck suited for short-haul — day cab, straight truck, or box truck

Career Path
Local driving is ideal for drivers who value home time above everything else. Growth comes from building relationships with local shippers, getting dedicated routes (same lanes every day = maximum efficiency), or specializing in high-paying niches like port drayage or hazmat delivery. Some local drivers eventually buy a second truck and hire another driver to run their routes.

Local Truck Driver Jobs FAQ
Common questions about local truck driver jobs with O Trucking.
How much do local truck drivers earn?
Local drivers doing 3 drops at $200 each gross $600/day, $3,000/week. Expenses are much lower than OTR — no hotels, less fuel, less maintenance. Net take-home often matches OTR drivers.
What freight is available for local drivers?
Depends on your area. Big categories: port drayage (near ports), LTL deliveries, last-mile e-commerce, furniture/appliance delivery, and warehouse-to-store runs. Major metros near distribution hubs have the most freight.
Are local driving jobs available outside major cities?
Most concentrated in major metros — Dallas, Houston, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, New Jersey. But mid-size cities near interstate junctions or distribution parks also have local freight. Tell us your location and we'll be straight with you about what's available.
Do I need a CDL for local driving jobs?
Not always. Box truck and hotshot positions under 26,001 lbs GVWR don't require a CDL. Day cab and tractor-trailer positions require a CDL-A or CDL-B. We have positions for both.
What's the best metro area for local truck driving?
Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and the New Jersey/New York metro have the most local freight volume. Port cities (LA/Long Beach, Savannah, Houston) pay premium rates for drayage. Any metro near a major distribution hub or Amazon fulfillment center has strong local demand.
How many loads per day do local drivers run?
Typically 2-4 loads per day, depending on distance and load type. Port drayage drivers might do 3 round trips at $150-250 each. LTL drivers average 4-6 stops. Last-mile delivery drivers can hit 8-15 stops on shorter routes. More stops = more daily revenue.
Do local drivers need ELD devices?
If your vehicle is over 10,001 lbs GVWR and you operate within a 150-air-mile radius, you may qualify for the short-haul exemption (no ELD required — use a timecard instead). Outside that radius or over 26,001 lbs, ELD is mandatory. Check FMCSA's short-haul rules for your specific situation.
