A Day in the Life

You wake up in your sleeper cab at a truck stop somewhere between Memphis and Dallas. Coffee from the truck stop (or your cab's coffee maker if you're smart), then a quick pre-trip and you're rolling by 6 AM. Today's load is taking you 500 miles west — you'll drive 8-9 hours with fuel stops and a 30-minute break. Your dispatcher already has tomorrow's load lined up: a pickup 40 miles from your delivery point. While you drive, you're scanning for the best fuel prices on your app, planning where you'll park tonight (finding truck parking after 8 PM is a competitive sport), and keeping one eye on the weather. You eat lunch from your cooler — OTR veterans learn fast that truck stop food destroys both your wallet and your waistline. By 4 PM, you're at the receiver, dropped your trailer, and parked for the night. Time for some Netflix in the sleeper, a phone call home, and sleep. Tomorrow you do it again.

Career Path

OTR is where you build miles fast and earn the highest per-mile rates. After 1-2 years of OTR experience, most drivers have enough savings and road knowledge to either transition to higher-paying regional routes (more home time) or become owner-operators (more money, more responsibility). Some OTR drivers build up to running team with a spouse, doubling their truck's revenue.

OTR Truck Driver Jobs FAQ

Common questions about otr truck driver jobs with O Trucking.

How much do OTR drivers earn?

OTR drivers running 2,500-3,500 miles/week typically gross $65,000-$90,000+ annually. At $2.50/mile average, that's $6,250-$8,750 per week gross. After expenses, most OTR drivers net $1,200-$2,000+ per week.

How does home time work for OTR?

You set the schedule. Some drivers do 2 weeks out, 3 days home. Others run 3 weeks and take a full week off. Tell your dispatch team your preferred rhythm and they route your loads to get you home on schedule.

Is OTR driving hard on family life?

It's time away from home — that's the honest reality. But the earning potential is significantly higher than local or regional. Many drivers run OTR for 2-3 years to build savings, then transition to regional with more home time.

Do I need a sleeper cab for OTR?

Strongly recommended. You'll be out 2-3 weeks at a stretch. A day cab means paying for hotels every night, which kills your profit. Most OTR drivers run mid-roof or raised-roof sleepers.

How do I manage truck parking on OTR routes?

Plan your stops by 2 PM — after 8 PM, most truck stops are full. Use apps like TruckPark, Trucker Path, or the Pilot/Flying J app to reserve spots. Walmart parking lots are hit-or-miss (check local policies). Rest areas fill up fast on I-81, I-95, and I-10. Many experienced OTR drivers pre-plan every night's parking before they start their driving day.

What's the best truck for OTR driving?

Freightliner Cascadia and Kenworth T680 are the top choices for fuel efficiency (7-8 MPG). Peterbilt 579 if you want a premium ride. For the sleeper, go mid-roof minimum — raised roof if you're tall. Budget $80,000-120,000 for a reliable used daycab or $100,000-160,000 for a quality used sleeper.

How do OTR drivers handle taxes?

As an owner-operator, you're self-employed (1099). Set aside 25-30% of gross for taxes. Deduct fuel, maintenance, insurance, truck payments, per diem ($69/day for 2024), and tolls. Quarterly estimated taxes are due in April, June, September, and January. Most OTR drivers use a trucking-specific accountant — it pays for itself in deductions you'd otherwise miss.
